Seems to me they are closely related, but using a thought experiment if you only sat in your living room and did nothing, then you avoid being bad. If you go outside and help the little ol' lady with her lawn care, you did good.
Karma - do more good than harm....
But limit the harm.
Avoiding bad is OK, but it still leaves a big gap - trying to do good is great, but make sure you are not doing bad because of faulty knowledge - The Law of Unintended Consequences rears its ugly head a LOT. This law is a subset of Murphy's law.
And don't forget - "No good deed goes unpunished."
I think it is important to do good in little ways .... Hugh makes a good point and I totally understand what Tom is saying .... those who set out to do good for the betterment of all in society often end up causing great harm ...
So try to avoid doing bad ... and let the good you do be small kindnesses whenever the chance comes up ...
do most people want to "do good" all of the time? sometimes it feels good to be a little bad..of course your definintion of bad would matter. bad, in my case, is going skinny dipping in the hot tub. now if it were to bring a loaded hand gun to work, well, enough said. Overall, being good feels better most of the time.

It is better to try to do good because if you spend all your time avoiding the bad you would not be doing anything at all. Sometimes bad things happen that end up leading to good things.
Do what you can to get by life, go with the flow, as long as you don't do anything bad, you are SAFE!!!
