Question #309

There have been 3 school shootings in the past week .... any suggestions on what schools should do to prevent such things?

I have no idea how to prevent this... seems like no matter what is tried, someone finds a way around what is put in place.... it is called escalation. I have a knife, so you get a gun, I get a gun, so you get a semi-automatic, I get a semi-automatic, you get a poisonous gas.....It is very sad times we live in. And I do think the media is partly to blame

While I think schools can take precautions to try to prevent such shootings, through increased security, as my wife eloquently stated, someone will find away around it. Making our schools prisons under lockdown is not going to enhance education in this country either. Sadly, I wish I had an answer for this problem, but I don't, unless it would be to counsel people that they have options, there are always options no matter how bad things are.

Issue everyone a side arm when they come to school - then the playing field will be even.

This is a joke, and I understand that this is really not a joking matter.

The liberal knee jerk response is to collect all the guns, but as PATR says, the people who do this type of thing will just use another weapon.

I also have no solution to this problem except vigilance by everyone at schools.

Of couse, the next thing I expect to hear is that if we were not involved in Iraq, we would have troops to station at all schools - so the school shootings are President Bush's fault.

That is all we need, armored vehicles parked in all school parking lots. Where will the teachers park?

EASY.
FIGURE OUT "WHY" THEY DO IT.
AMERICANS LOVE CONTESTS, LOTTERIES,
ETC., ETC, LETS ASK THEM WHY THEY WANT TO TAKE KIDS WITH THEM. IF
THEY ARE BENT ON SUICIDE JUST GO OUT IN THE WOODS AND DO IT. LEAVE
THE KIDS SUFFER ALGEBRA.

As a child I recall seeing the Vietnam war on TV. Once while eating Dinner, the scenes became so disturbing that Mom got up and turned the TV off. We didn't have the TV on while eating dinner again. This has left it's mark on me.

If you want kids/adults to stop their desire to do grievous bodily harm to other people, show them the consequences of thier actions. I think a walk through the morgue so you can see what a Gun Shot Wound looks like and the damage it does, or a shotgun blast to the face can do to a person is right in line with the sort of graphic education required to give someone a sense of perspective. God knows video games, which I do not play, become ever the more violent with each passing year.

Hopefully this will make some students think twice before acting, and also encourage other students that know fellow students that desire to perform such insanity to turn them into the cops.

In the end though you can't stop the sort of nut cases that just wander into a school with a weapon as has been the case lately. If schools had a turn-style door that locked if you don't have the proper ID like some professional corporations, that would stop some of these nut cases from making it into the school.

I agree with PATR though, these will continue to happen and the media is partly to blame. Just last night on TV they asked an expert why people perform these shootings, particularly adults, and the simple answer was attention, and yet that is exactly what the future nut case is viewing when they discuss the most recent tragedies on TV. It feeds on itself, and there should be a law made against reporting these things period. I know it sounds easy but the video game people and the media should be reeled in.

At my daughter's school, before anyone volunteers, you have to submit a Child Abuse Clearance , a Criminal History Check and take a 2 hour course. Just to get into the school, you have to buzz the intercom system, announce who you are, why you are there, and they have a camera to see who you are before they "buzz" you in. Pain in the neck? Yes. But do I feel she is safer...somewhat. (No metal detectors, or bomb sniffing dogs...just "extra security" measures")That at least is a small step in the right direction for the sickos that wander in off the street. Now as far as what to do about students that come into schools with guns and a grudge that kill fellow students and/or teachers and their principals? Good Lord...I just don't know. Discussion, better communication/monitoring between parents and children? I don't know.

I don't have an answer for what happened at the Amish school on Monday. They live by a different code and that's part of of their Religious beliefs. I heard they are considering keeping one telephone in the school houses now. I know that some Amish Dairy farmers had to bend to Health Laws and have Electricty in their barns only. I don't think it would be such a stretch to keep their children safer.

I just don't understand why these sicko's, if they're going to committ suicide in the end, have to take inncocent lives beforehand. If they want to go out in a "blaze of glory"...call a news press, and just do it to themselves!

I live out here with the Amish. Some of my neighbors are relatives of some of the victims. You will not find a kinder group of people if you tried. In past years, when we were snowed in, the Dairy farmers came by on horse and buggy bringing milk and home made bread to the families stranded.

Today, even in the midst of their grief, they have asked for people to forgive Roberts and pray for his family as well. I find it easy to do the latter, but difficult to do the 1st. But I'm trying.Sorry to be so long winded. I guess I needed to get this off my chest.
