Question #327

Do you think that the USA needs to have Daylight Savings Time?

Since many of us aren't really sure what the history is ... here is a very interesting link ...

While I do not like the switch to and from Daylight Savings Time, I alway appreciated the extra time in the summer when I lived in Maine. In Texas, no, we need to get rid of it. Who needs to spend an extra hour in 100+ heat.

I would love to have DST 365 days of the year. On standard time, I get up in the dark, go to work in the dark, work in a dark building and go home in the dark. I want to hibernate when we go back to standard time.

I love Standard Time .... I think the US should just leave the time alone ... DST has outlived its usefulness.

Yesterday just felt SO GOOD!! I have really missed that hour they took away from us in the Spring. You wouldn't think an hour would make that much difference ... butI sure felt it yesterday!!

((This is Standard time, Right??))

DST needs to go, period! This is my understanding of how DST came about. Started by the Germans during the Weimar Republic between WWI and WWII to save money since a wheel barrel of money was needed to buy a loaf of bread. So to save energy they shifted the time relative to the sun so that people awoke in partial light and not darkness, thereby eliminating the need to either burn that candle or turn on that light. When I lived in WEST Germany (1980's), they didn't even follow DST, they might now, I don't know. So here we have America, the country that holds onto other countries ideas once they don't even perfrom them anymore. Anyone for metric, even England doen't use English units anymore. Go figure!

Nop - oulived its usefulness.

I understand its origins differently from Hugh - it weas created in the early part of the 20th century to provcide extra daylight to bring in the harvest, which is senseless becuase when there is work to do on the farm, you do it, regardless of daylight or dark.

NO. I used to enjoy it as a teenager because it gave me a very week excuse to break curfew but I hate the fact that it starts getting dark at 5:30pm when it's actually 6:30pm.

I HATE DST. I think I could have seasonal affective disorder or something. I feel so much better when we're on standard time. Lord knows I'll do what's best for the country, but heck we all have clocks now, those who want to get up earlier can. I know it was good for the war effort and for farmers, but I don't think it's useful any more.
