No only THOSE OTHER PEOPLE who have OTHER BAD HABITS other than mine should have to pay. Isn't that the American way?

This is a tough one. As a person who has been fighting the battle of the bulge ALL MY LIFE, I could be lumped in that category...and I was a smoker for a number of years, and, yes, I drink. I'm ambivilant about this topic. I do receive support from my insurance carrier, but it seems really intrusive. There are questions about how many calories I ate this week, how many drinks I took, what type of carbs I ate, did I get out to walk or go to the gym, etc.

I do all the things I should, and only go to the doctor 4 times a year, as needed for the conditions which I suffer, but damn. To make me pay more in premiums is...well, unAmerican. I should be able to enjoy my bad habits in the privacy of my own home or my chosen bar and not pay extra for them. My premiums are high enough as it is.

Well, I did pose the question and from the looks of it, not many of you want to answer....

I can definitely say for sure I don't know how I feel. In my position, I see that my company spends MILLIONS of dollars annually for medical costs since we are self insured and pay Blue Cross 100% back for what they pay the providers....

However, being in a group that will be targeted in the near future, I don't want to pay more for insurance than the next person. And what will be next, will they target red haired people because they have more skin cancer. Will they target people whose parents had cancer.... it goes on and on...

What it all boils down to is that we have an overall problem with healthcare in the US and there is no easy answer... Moreover, I don't see anyone standing up and questioning the situation loudly.

FYI our new policy states: if you lie about smoking, it is grounds for immediate termination.
