I would say my favorite books recently would have to be the Harry Potter series of books and their moview counterparts. I have loved all of the movies very much. I believe they stand on their own quite well and for the most part follow the books. However, they could never be as good as the books because the movies are always and adaptation or representation of the books from which they come. Of the movies though, Prisoner of Azkaban comes darn close.
The best Book to Movie I can think of is Shawshank Redemption .... the original story was titled "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King.
Stephen King also had another good book to movie adaptation ... of another prison book .... The Green Mile.

Oh - Forrest Gump - the movie was better than the book. I was not a fan of the book, but liked the movie.
i love the Harry Potter series too. the books are so much better.
