H1N1 is not a new virus outright, but this variant does seem to be something new with swine,avain and human genomes contained within the virus (Reuters). However H1N1 is by no means new and most people likley have encountered this virus in the past and have partial immunity to it.
This touches on immigration, airline and road travel (yes, Biden was correct in what he said), and the means by which a sovereign nation has the right to protect it's citizens from a threat.
What if we found out tomorrow that this was genetically engineered to intentionally infect humans and create havoc? Then many citizens opinions would change very quickly, but because all indications are that this is a normal mutation, well we are not in an uproar over sovereignty.
I feel for the little boy and his parents who continually brought the boy into the Mexican hospital, and the doctors there kept giving him antibiotics, decongestants and pain relievers. In desperation he was driven by his parents from Matamoros, Mexico into Brownsville, TX. American Doctors recognized it as Swine Flu and sent him to Houston immediately, where he unfortunately died.
I think this underscores the massive differences between Mexico and the US. Mexico - too little, too late and alot of talk (nothing). America - too much, too soon and mostly hyperbole.
Now the government is spending millions on Swine Flu H1N1 vaccines. How about SARS and H5N1 (Avian-Bird Flu). Where are those vaccines?
Ironically Reuters also reported that the once bustling Matamoros/Brwonsville border crossing, normally slammed with day workers, is now a ghost town. Turns out fear works as a far better sovereign deterent than logic? Welcome to our corner of the cosmos!
I think a lot of it is media hype too. It's odd how the latest flu season we just went through had the exact symptoms. Has it been here already? I have really come to hate the news because it glorifies itself at the "National Enquirer" and seeks ratings by sensationalism instead of just good investigative reporting.
I agree with Hugh, where was the reaction from governments on the other threats.
Wash your hands and call it a day.
