Question #610

If you had $30 million in the bank from the lottery .... all taxes, etc have been paid .... how would you handle the money? Would you share with family and friends? Would you move? Feel free to add to your answer as you dream about having $30 million in the bank!

I would buy trees and tree up my property. I don't think I would move right away.

I would get every modification I want on my house.

I would pay off all the debt of my good friends and immediate family with a one time cash offer LOL...

Anyone that gets my financial help would also get a DVD about handling money. (is that bitchy?)

OK now.. the good part. I would use the charity after family to help our country's poor.

I'm not talking about hand outs but pathways.

I would want to create pathways to empowerment.

I would share some with family and friends, the key word in this sentence is "some". I would also invest this money so that it can begin to earn money in excess of its present value. We might move at some point.

I would definetely move, most probably to the Big Bend Area of Texas.

People asking you for money is a given so I would take that on a case by case basis, kinda like Steve Martin did in the movie 'The Jerk'.

With Charities, like Habit for Humanity that I have supported in the past, it is more an issue of I'd rather volunteer my time as versus giving money. Most, but not all; Charities, actually squander their money and it is something they don't want the likes of us to know about. They hide it as administrative costs.

Yeah, those admin costs are paying for the CEO to fly each weekend in his jet to visit his underage girlfriends that he has conveniently provided a condo. If you don't beleive me research United Way on Wikipedia and click the link to William Aramony.

Folks the Salvation Army is the best of them all, dollar for dollar more money makes it too the actual end user. They are pretty thrifty.

That much money would change my life bunches. I'd make changes to my house...paint, remodel, etc. I'd probably hire a friend ot two to handle my affairs (read pleas for money, invest, pay bills, etc.), so I could be free to do stuff I wanted to do. I know that would entail providing Social Security payments, insurance, and a retirement plan, but hey, they're working. Sometimes they would have to travel with me too. I'd donate some to organizations I already support like the effort to rebuild New Orleans, Catholic Charities, battered womens centers or Habitat for Humanity. I would endow my kids with funds they would earn.

Investments and lots of lawyers.

I would share with friends and family. Yes, we would probably move and have 2 homes. And Travel more.

But most of all, I would not work in my current job a day longer than needed to hand it off to someone else.

After figuring out where to live and build a house with a gas stove equipped kitchen for Doug, I would figure out how to get people to thing differently.

We live in a society that places value on those that can buy products that the world sells. If they are too young or too old to fit into that demographic they are SOL. I would like to see what I could do to change that.

I do not want to be valued for what I can purchase but what I do with the life I am given

Now if I can only figure out how to tackle this task....

I would give probably a third of the money to family and friends ... preferably set up in a trust fund or some way that they wouldn't have to pay penalties or taxes on the money .... maybe set up retirement funds for all the nieces and nephews ...

I would invest most of the rest in an account and live off the interest ... $20 million invested at just 5% simple interest earns $1,000,000 a year.

We would not move immediately ... in fact, we wouldn't do too much immediately ... We would need to have a trusted financial advisor and take our time making decisons.

First off, would be the $3m to the church. I'd probably designate a large portion of that to the building fund in hopes that the Recreation Center could be built to keep more kids from South Arlington off the streets.

Each of my great great nieces and nephews would receive $50,000 toward their education. Since the oldest of those will be 3 in February, those funds should grow to cover their educations nicely.

Each great niece or nephew would receive $125,000 toward education or paying off those educations or for starting up their own business. (Ages 2 to 28)

Each niece and nephew would receive $250,000 and then they'd have to leave me alone financially, since I've not only taken care of them but also their kids and grandkids. LOL (Ages 33 to 48)

Of course, I'd share with my sister. Maybe I'd give her $2m so that we could enjoy shopping together. And I think I'd get us a nice condo down at Orange Beach (Alabama) where we could hang out together. We'd stroll the beach and get sunburned and find shells and sing and talk to God like we do and then we'd go shopping and eating at places we really like such as Lulu's in Gulf Shores. I'd get my brother in law a boat too with a trailer so that he could go fishing and leave us alonge. And I'd visit her a lot more frequently.

I'd give a chunk to a few friends who are trying to live on disability. I'd fix up the house and definitely hire someone to do something with my backyard.

And I'd invest a lot more in my REIT as it is the best investment that I've ever had. I have a fine Christian financial advisor who got me started with that one.

Oh, and last but not least, the 2010 family reunion would be one that would never be forgotten!!! We do the 4th of July once every 5 years. We'd camp this time near Six Flags over St Louis and I'd give everyone a pass for a day at the park, anonomously, as I wouldn't want them to know that I had the money. We'd have "goody bags" that would include free fast food meals for the families, and tsshirts and caps and notepads and pencils and address books and games and.....
