We coped with fans and siestas. I'm on Monserrat right now. I'm staying with friends with no a/c. We move slowly. We drink pleanty of water (or rum and coke). We take naps. We use fans. That's it. Oh yes, there is pleanty of shade. We wear little. Not bad.

Good Question.
We did not have Air Conditioning as kids in Oklahoma but we were always playing under the spray of the hose or in a huge water trough full of water (cheap private swimming pool) and sleeping outside under the stars or on my Grandma's good ole screened-in porch with the dogs.
But, you know, kids can tolereate just about anything and think it is fun.

During the day I was to busy playing to worry about the heat. We had sprinklers and someone always had a pool. Swam in a lot of lakes. I remember at night laying in bed waiting for the curtains to move....ah a breeze!

LOL, sorry...I can remember my dad going to work in the city wearing a suit and had to wear a long sleeve white shirt and tie! In the summer they were allowed to take off their jackets while working! He was a draftsman for electric co. Said it got pretty smelly, LOL!

AT FIRST THIS WAS A BIG BIG PROBLEM
TO ANSWER THEN IT OCCURRED TO ME,
"WHO EVER MISSED SOMETHING THEY
NEVER HAD". THE MOVIE THEATER
WAS THE ONLY THING "AIR-CONDITIONED" FOR THE FIRST COUPLE
YEARS OF IT, THEN THE STORES AND
LAST OF ALL WAS HOMES. IT WAS NOT
A BIG PROBLEM AS LONG AS THERE WAS
A BREEZE, BESIDES WE WERE GOING
THROUGH A DEPRESSION AND IT WAS
A LUXURY FEW COULD AFFORD,
AND PEOPLE WERE MADE OF BETTER STUFF IN THOSE YEARS. THAT'S THE WAY TO "COPE".

I don't think even 48 years ago in New Orleans we were without A/C, but as adult, I spent one miserable summer pregnant at Ft.Know with no A/C we spent a lot of time in the car. It had A/C and dressed lightly and used fans. I know that I told my DH that I refused to spend the night at his mom's tonight cause of no A/C and heat index over 100 so we got a motel room for after the party.

Spent many days running through sprinklers or if lucky got invites to friends that had pools! If all else failed would fill bath tub with cold water and just chill, the really fun part was getting out until you got hot and then jump back in.....Mom would get upset...don't know why. hehehehe
just 'cause we used all the clean towels.....

I don't know. I don't remember when we didn't have a/c. I remember my parents talking about it, back when there was only electricity downtown. I think they spent a lot of time in the stores and movie theaters in the summertime where there was a/c. LOL. The houses were also built with lots of windows so a breeze would blow through. Personally I think I would just die.

Open windows with a breeze goign through and a frsh dip in a lake is a great tway to cool off wihtout AC. :D

Played in the sprinklers, went to the pool or stayed in front of a fan.
