On my 8th or 9th birthday, we had a huge snow storm the night before my birthday. It was a surprise to everyone, but especially my parents. I was having a slumber party of 10 or 12 girls that night, so the next morning Mom & Dad had to drive them all home in this wintry mess. I think we had a foot or more accumulation. What a great birthday present for me...

I remember when I was in 6th grade, living in Virginia. My bed was underneath the window and I woke up with snow drifted on the bed - it was a snow day! With over 36 inches!

We (my brothers & I) built a snow fort in the front yard, and used our snow saucers (remember them?) on the hill in the back yard - then went in the hot chocolate.

We then trudged to Lynch's Hill - a big hill next to the nearby golf course and toboganned all afternoon. It was great.

I also remember May 12, 1977, in college in Boulder, CO. It snowed 36 inches in one day - I spent the day in a bar.

I grew up in Northern Illinois and it snowed in the winter and people went on with their daily lives!! Snowplows ran, roads were salted, we all had snow tires for our cars ...

However ... there was one time ... 1979, I believe ... when it snowed so much that the country road I lived on had over 6 feet of snow on it ... and plows did not get through for 2 weeks!!

Local townies snowmobiled supplies out to us ... Beer and Cigarettes and decks of cards ... the IMPORTANT things!! LOL ...

The main highways were open ... but the farmers were shut-in unless they had snowmobiles!

When I was in Kindergarden, I lived on Forbes Air Force Base in Kansas. We had one snow day near my birthday. I remember I came down with pneumonia soon after that day. Seems the dress I wanted to wear was out on the clothes line. I went out after it in the snow! We were off that day, and my mom spent the day trying to warm me up.

Today I will remember. Everyone in the Dallas area is having a snow day, but we in the Dallas ISD? N-o-o-o-o-o-o. I'm sitting in my classroom with 4 students and two other teachers!!!!!

THE WEATHER MAN GAVE UP ON THE MINUS
NUMBERS THIS MORNING. HE REPORTED
IT AS "CRUNCHY COLD". TO YOU WARM
TEXEANS THAT MEANS AS YOU WALK TO YOUR CAR [PRAYING IT WILL START] YOUR FOOTPRINTS 'CRUNCH' AND'SQUEAL'
AS YOU WALK ON THE SNOW.
"SNOW DAYS" WERE INVENTED LONG AFTER
I GRADUATED FROM SCHOOL. THE ONLY
CONCESSION I CAN RECALL THEY ALLOWED
THE GIRLS TO WEAR 'SNOW PANTS' UNDER
THEIR DRESSES,BUT THEY HAD TO GO TO THEIR RESTROOM TO TAKE THEM OFF AND
PUT THEM BACK ON AT THE END OF THE DAY.IF YOU LIVED MORE THAN 10 BLOCKS
FROM SCHOOL YOU COULD BRING YOUR LUNCH IN A PAPER SACK.
SNOW DAYS WERE INVENTED YEARS LATER
WHEN SISSYFIED KIDS STARTED COMING
TO SCHOOL. SCHOOL WAS NEVER CANCELLED IN ALL THE YEARS I WAS THERE.

I have a lot of SNOW DAY memories! Tobogganing down Roseanne Ferraro's hill, building snow forts with the icy 4 foot drifts, etc. And some recent memories as well! One year, (I don't remember how old I was) I can remember looking out the window and seeing just the top of my Dad's hat as he was shoveling the driveway. Of course, we kids thought it was grand, but my Mom was very concerned! Now I realize why!

Wow! We didn't get any, just a flake or two floating through the air. WAH!!!!!

I remember when I was a kid we used to get at least one good snow every winter and school would close. My mom would make us dress up in what seems like a million layers of clothes to go outside an play in the snow. Seriously she did make us wear at least 2 or 3 pairs of pants and shirts and socks and then there was the gloves and coats and all that. It took forever to get ready to go out. It was always so much fun to out and build a snowman.

I remember once it snowed and they let school out early and I walked home, must have been in about 1st grade, and slipped and rolled down the hill going up the hill to my house (felt like I was a snow man. LOL) -- got home and nobody was home -- was SCARED to death because I never stayed home alone but my mom appeared soon after because she was just across the street. LOL
