No - this social experiement failed in the Roman Empire. At one point in their decline the Roman Empire decided to force upon the children the profession of their father. It was a disaster. Do you want a Doctor who says, 'oh I'm just a Doctor because my dad was a Doctor.' I think not, so why would you want to choose the profession of your children at birth?

If you could choose the profession they were NOT going to be maybe... i.e. professional criminal, professional of the night, drug dealer etc. But otherwise, no. Free Will, isn't it grand!!!

NEVER...and didn't! Both my children have pursued their own careers. I would have resented my parents greatly if it had been me!

Freedom of choice. I would never push a career on my child that they did not enjoy. We should always have the choice to change what we are doing at any time. If you are not doing what you enjoy, fix it.

I would not choose their profession but there is historical evidence that this has worked in certain cases. One such case was Frank Lloyd Wright. His mother was adamant that he would be a great architect some day. She put etchings of the designs of the great master architects in his room as a child. Encouraged him to draw and design. Practically willed him to his profession and the rest they say is history.
