YES! I irritates me to the point of needing a soap box. I'll just stop here, since time is not an abundant commodity I have this morning.
I'm irked that we have to "Press 1" for English. This country was settled by the English. No, they were not perfect, but they did some things right: German is not our official language, and the turkey is not our national bird! When I lived in Germany, official documents, communications, and directions were in German. There is an Institute of Language for French. The cost to the taxpayer (insert your photo or mine) is outrageous! Assimilation does not mean one must give up one's culture or language; it means one learns the language and customs of the place where one lives. I don't think anyone should do without basic needs such as shelter, food, health care, but to access them, people should meet the established infrastructure half way...SPEAK ENGLISH
I couldn't agree more with my fellow bloggers, we need to enforce the official language but eliminating bilingual materials and education. Generations have come to this country and had to at least attempt to learn the language to afford themselves of the opportunities this country provides. They were not provided a host of materials, signage, education and training in their native tongue on how to navigate daily life in their new home.
Think of the money that could be saved to provide much needed help to our citizens.
In short, if I can learn 3 foreign languages of my own volition then other folks can learn 1 new one.
Totally bothers me - why - I lived in Germany for 8 years, most of those as a civilian. I learned to read, write and speak German.
The founding Fathers of America had a vote to determine the language we would speak. As Totsie pointed out we do not speak German by 1 VOTE, and Ben Farnklin also wanted the Turkey as the national bird since it was native to America.
I lived legally in Germany, residency and work permit and all. I am livid that someone can run across our border and just want what we have and GET IT!
Parkland Hospital SCREAMS at the State to do something about the illegals coming into the Hospital. The State does nothing and instead Parkland is forced to hit up the county for more taxes. Saw it ALL on PBS! I couldn't make up something so nuts.
Under any other circumstances if any one nation had so many of their citizens breaching our borders it would be considered an INVASION, which is what this is.
Congrats to Irving for asking, "Hey you belong here, pay taxes?", " No Habla Anglais"; " Well come on over here and get out!"
YES!! I hate it. I do get a laugh at the ATM at my bank though. When I put in my card, it disaplays my name and a welcome in English, and ask me to put in my PIN, in english. It then prompts "1 for English . . .
Bozos
I hate it too...if you don't speak the language, tough. We shouldn't have to accommodate anyone's language barrier, whether they are in the US legally or not. No other country in the world, that I'm aware of anyway, accommodates those that do not speak their language the way that the USA does. It's ridiculous, costly and downright wrong! That's all. :)
Another note: I admire people who can speak more than one language. Upon occasion I have been forced to try to speak others: I speak Spanish when visiting family in Mexico, Italian when I was there, Spanish in Spain too, German in Germany, French in France. No, I was not proficient, but in all but one, the people with whom I tried to communicate we friendly and helpful. They all tried to help me as much as possible. All except the French, but that's another story. I cannot believe that we would do less with people who even TRIED to speak English.
YES!!! And all of you said it better than I would!!! Thanks!!!
