No, probably not....
I like the 'comfort' of civiliation too much.
Yes I would have headed west to strike it rich, but I wouldn't have wasted a single breath mining for gold to do it. I would have setup a very lucrative business to separate the miners and others from their money and riches. Say a saloon or brothel. They were in high demand.

Wow .... that PEF is one smart operator!!
I would have to say that it would depend on what my lifemate wanted to do ....
If I had been single at the time, probably NOT .... single women back then didn't do much but work for PEF in his Brothel.
If I had a strong, intelligent husband with an eye for a dollar and a will to work ..... I'd be willing to support his choice ad accompany him. We'd probably join PEF in his ventures!! LOL ....
This question facisnates me because throughout human history there have been Booms and Busts and almost without fail, the people who made the real money were either the ones who owned the land being prospected or those that setup businesses to profit from the boom and got out before the bust. The modern day equivalent would be a Mark Cuban.
