I got my 1st car at age 17 1/2. I got it the summer before starting college. (It was a Gremlin)Before anyone says anything, my Dad owned the Dealership and it was a Demo! Hey, it was better than the Pacer I had to drive around in the next 2 years! (also Demos! Fishbowls on wheels!) My "real" 1st car, my Dad got me after I graduated college. It was a '77 Red Camaro with very little mileage and a V8 engine! I ended up giving that to my hubby and we bought a "sensible" 4 door car to accomadate the baby safety seat!

My son got my husbands 4 wheel drive Pathfinder when he was 19 as he was living in upstate New York and they get a lot of snow! Plus, he does a lot of traveling for Judo and needed a reliable car. My daughter was lucky as she got her Grandmother's almost new Nissan Infinity handed down to her in my Mother In Law's will just before her Senior year in High School. They both have part time jobs so they pay for their own gas and at today's prices....that's a lot!

I got to drive the family sedan while in high school ... but it wasn't "mine". My first two years of college, I wasn't allowed a car on campus ... but the last two years that old family sedan (a Chevy Impala) became MY car ... dents and all ... the first 3 letters on the plates were UGH ... so we all called it the UGH-Mobile ... and it held 7 adults so I was often the designated driver.

I had to pay for gas, but I do not recall paying for insurance.

Then in April of my senior year in college, my dad got a wild hair and bought me a used Dodge Aspen ... he and Mom drove it down and took the UGH-Mobile home. Once I got my first real job I took over insurance payments and all ...

The first car I bought myself wasn't until I was 25 maybe??

The BEST cars have turned out to be my Nissans and I love my Murano.

As for my Child ... I would like to handle it much the same way my parents did. Get him a used, but safe, car ... have him mind his education and pay for gas. He can have a NEW car when he gets a "real" job and can afford the payments, etc.

The firast car I drove extensively was a 1962 Chevy shortbed pickup. It was my father's, and great to really learn to drive with. I wrecked it my senior year in High School.

The next car I drove extensively/exclusively was a 1968 Chevy Camaro - more or less a muscle car. Also my father's, which he let me use after he got a another car. I drove this when in the Army at 17 and stationed in Virginia. I let a friend drive it and he wrecked it.

The first car I bought and owned was a red 1966 MGB - a little red sports car. I was 18 and stationed in Hawaii - it was great. I bought it for $300 - I compounded it and tuned it, but there was nothing I could do about the electrical system. Anyone who knows older cars knows that MG's and other British cars had terrible electrical systems. On this one, the lights did not work when it rained, and it rains a lot in Hawaii.

We let the kid drive our vehicles, but he has not yet been agitating too much for one of his own. If he pushes, we will get hime one - for which he will pay the insurance and carry the loan (we will co-sign). This is a great way to get his credit started positively, but he will have to have a job.

I got my first car right before I turned 16. It was a big ole banana colored Impala. I had to have a car b/c my dad had already passed away and my mother never learned how to drive and was quite ill. I was the only kid left at home, the only kid even within 100 miles of home, so somebody had to take care of everything and get her where she needed to go. One of my brothers bought the boat for me from a friend of his.

I will probably do the same for my kiddo. Not for the same reasons though...I want her to have a car so I don't have to play chauffer all the time!!! She will have to keep her grades up and continue to be a "responsible young lady" or the car goes away. I feel confident that she will do whatever it takes to maintain her wheels!!! She will definitely get used wheels and will have to wait until she is on her own and ready for car payments, etc. to get a new car. I agree with Tom that cosigning for a car for the kid would be a great way to establish a positive credit rating. We may do that too somewhere down the line.

Hailie will be driving alone in February (she still just has a permit until then and has to have me in the car with her), so consider yourself warned if you dare to enter Tarrant County after the first of the year!!

Well, my dad being a gear head started buying me cars when I turned 14. I think he purchased me 4 or 5 cars before my mom decided that the BLACK GRIMLIN HATCHBACK was the safest one for me. (RH - what color was yours?) I lost out on several sporty cars including a camero. The Grimlin was a terrible car. Mom found a photo of it a few weeks ago and asked if I wanted it. I said, No thank you....

My second car was a Monte Carlo that dad bought from a friend. It was FAST and it was pretty! Then when I started college, Dad arranged it where he bought a new 1985 Olds Calis and I paid for 1/3 of it. It was RED and even FASTER! I received 1 speeding ticket in all those years of driving like a bat out hell.

If possible, I would like to give my kids (if there are any) thier first car just as my parents did. Then they can go find a job to pay for the INSURANCE!

Well, here's the story. I learned to drive and received my license the spring after I turned 21. I went to high school in Germany. We rode busses, trams, and trains. I also saw a horrendous accident...my first dead body, on the autobahn, so I didn't want to drive. When we returned to the states my mom toted me to and from college for two years. She was/is a nurse, so she had to be at work usually around 6:30. Dad would take me, but she would pick me up. When finals time rolled around, and I was starting to stay at the library until sometimes 2 AM, she forced me to learn how to drive with an instructor after my dad and sister tried to teach me. Each time they tried, I walked home because they yelled at me. My first car was a hand-me-down from my dad. It was a VW 411 he had fitted with a Porche 911 engine. Who knew you had to put oil and transmission fluid in those things? I killed it. It lasted me the last year of college, and I took it to Houston for my first job. After that, I drove a Chevette my husband bought.

The first car I bought on my own, without a cosigner was my red Dodge Ram 1500 pick up. It had a standard cab and a full bed. I loved it. I paid it off and had to sell it. I'm proud to say I've paid off 4 cars in my life, not counting the one I drive now.

Dave inherited his car when his dad died. The car he now drives, John bought him, and Dave paid it back in full. I'm proud of him for that. I have purchased a car for my daughter. All the cars are paid for. Suz will have to pay for her gas out of her allowance...which is not much these days. I'll pay her insurance until she graduates college. After that, she pays for the gas, insruance, car payments for a new car, and her own cell phone!

Pammy, I'm with you. Suz is on a permit, and drives on her own in February. She'll strike fear in the hearts of Dallas County drivers. I've already heard horror stories of a friend's daughter who drove her car into a duck pond!
