Question #395

What do you think about Global Warming?

Where is everyone today?

Okay, I'll kick this one off. I do belive in global warming. Each year our winters are less cold and our summers or more hot. And I also hear more about people having allergies, which could be worse due to a warmer climate that keeps the 'junk' in the air from going dormant.

However, all of this also maybe directly related to me aging and growing more sensitive to the heat.

Global warminh MAY be happening - there is no scientific agreement or certainty of this.

You may have seen a report in the press last week about the new UN study on climate change. The report released last week was a summary of the study (the study will be released in May) written by political and policy. The summary is a scare mongering piece of crap that is totally misleading. The actual report (I saw it online) backpedals from previous reports. This one says that the predicted melting of the ica sheets at the poles will be greatly reduced from previous predictions, and global temperature rise predictions have been cut in half. This leads me to believe that MAYBE the science is proving difficult for the crisis mongers to fiddle into what they want it to say.

A few interesting points -
1 - All the Un climat studies have said the same thing (in the fine print in the back of the reports) - that there are no conclusions as to the effect of cloud cover on temperatures. Some say clouds hold in the heat, while others say the clouds reflect sunlight and make things cooler - SO THIS VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF CLIMAT WAS LEFT OUT OF THE MODELS!!! That didn;t get repoerted, did it?
2 - the graphs and charts released with the summary report show a steady rise in global temperatures in the last 60 years - but if you look at the scale of the graphs, you will see that the steady rise equates to less than .4 degree F rise, and that is after a more than .4 degree F lowering in global temperature the 60 years before the rise.
3 - The actual UN study has a prediction of the rise of ocean levels at .03 inches from now until 2100 - that is within the statistical margin of error, which makes it insignificant. So, what exactly is melting?
4 - A recent story out of Iceland reported that the fishing industry in western Iceland has been hit hard by fisherman being attacked by polar bears - polar bears that WALKED ACROSS THE ICE SHEETS from Greenland and North America. So, what exactly is melting?
5 - Polar Bears were recently put on the warning list of potential engangered status (the next step from being considered actually endangered) because of the supposed loss of habitate due to global warming and the melting of the polar ice cap. This was surprising news to the main researcher of polar bears for the Canadian government, who stated that his research shows a marked rise in the numbers of polar bears in the last 50 years. Habitate disappearing, huh?
6 - Last, but absolutely not least. The Renaissance in Europe was when learning and art exploded across Europe - the time of Galileo and Da Vinci and Rembrandt, etc. This has been attributed to greatly increased production of food stuffs by European farmers and hersdman (people had leisure time!). The reason for the increase? A rise in mean temperatures across Europe caused by what is called a "Climatic Optimum", where the growing seasons lengthened. Studies have shown that during this optimal period for Europe, the TEMPERATURES WERE HIGHER THAN THEY ARE NOW.
So, even if global warming is happening - which I doubt, there is no proof that humans are causing it, and no proof that it is a bad thing to begin with.

I will now get off my soapbox

CIN YOU SURE KICKED BRONCO WHERE IT
HURTS THIS MORNING. DBQ. WAS MINUS
4 DEGREES AGAIN THIS MORNING. WHEN
IS THE WARMING TO START?????????????

Go on Bronco! - The man with the facts. I wish to expound on this debate as it appears alot of people seem to have bitten on Global Warming like a shark on chum. Detailed below is my counter-argument to Global Warming as it relates to human creation or human intervention. Long 'URL's were shorted using the website www.tinyurl.com

1. Firstly we must go back in history, to the Maunder Minimum in which a Solar Observer noticed a peculiar phenonmenon both on the surface of the sun, and the surface of the earth. Instead of the 40-50,000 sunspots normally observed per decade, he cataloged only 50. Curiously this co-incided with one of the coldest periods of near-history records, the so named 'Little Ice Age'. It was so cold in fact that the river Thames FROOZE solid for months, previously unrecorded in English history. People moved onto the ice and opened up shops( Source 'Nature's Companion Guide -Astronomy). Be fore-warned that my Maunder Minimum source - Wikipedia (http://tinyurl.com/p479h) - states that there is no correlation between the sunspot minimum and the coldest part of the Little Ice Age. But aren't we speculating about the postulation of Human creation and intervention as it relates to Global Warming?

2. A recent PBS NOVA documentary discussed of all things Global Cooling. A Meteorologist noticed reduced rates of water evaporation in certain parts of the world, notably of all places England, the very country where the most devastating Global Warming reports are published. It appeared Global Cooling would manifest itself in a certain portion of the world, skip over a few countries, continents, and re-appear. In other words it seemed almost selective in which countries/continents it affected. He confirmed his findings using data from a Russian scientist that had performed independent research.

The India Times article explains some of this Global Cooling phenomena (http://tinyurl.com/c6ys7). Shown below is an excerpt from this article - "In his latest best seller State of Fear, Michael Crichton does a devastating expose of the way ecological groups have tweaked data and facts to create mass hysteria. He points out that we know astonishingly little about the environment. All sides make exaggerated claims." Facts show that the earth has been warming slowly since the end of the last 'Little Ice Age' ending in 1850. Is this a long term trend? What is causing this?

3. The earth also experienced a cooling trend from 1940-1970. It was even made into a joke on the hit TV series Barney Miller in which a citizen approached the brainiac detective and wanted to file a complaint about the 'Did you know ...expanding polar ice caps ... at the rate of 50 meters per year?' too which he replied ' 'Yes, I do know!'. Remember late in the Carter Administration when Lake Effect snow covered Buffalo, NY, much like it is now. I do. Remember when the Mississppi River burst it banks in 1993 due to the tremendous amount of water in any form that was precipitated out of the atmosphere due to the cold. I do. Then where and when is this Global Warming?

Scientifically un-biased data, carefully examined that points too and supports an assumption or conclusion is one thing. It is an entirely different issue when so called scientific data, obtained under dubious circumstances with little or no independent verification is used to make speculative conclusions.

Example: Your light bulbs/flourescent lights. I have this theory that since they reduce darkness that they in fact absorb light, and once completely filled with darkness - extinguish. The flourescents are best at this warning in that they give you a 'heads-up' by flickering indicating they are almost full. This has the added affect of informing the person to burn fossil fuels to go to the hardware store and purchase more light absorbers.

Bundle up and Stay Warm - Hugh
