Question #401

Do you think states should make it illegal to use a cell phone while driving?

Should using a "hands-free" device be acceptable while driving?

Why or why not?

Yes I do.

It's funny (not) that people are annoyed by the hands free technology, change is tough, mostly because they don't like seeing people "talk into space" ..Oh well, get use to it!

Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel. Basic.

Using a cell phone is as bad as tuning the radio.

Use a hands free device!! Or, better yet, pull over and then make your call.

Cell phones should not be used in moving automobiles except in emergencies - such as too call 911. Studies done on both scenarios, that is cell phone to ear; and handsfree device have shown conclusively that the distraction causes drivers to faulter in their
ability to maneouvre their vehicle within acceptable safety limits.

The worst is the cell phone to ear. It seems to me this is self evident, it causes a lateral blind spot on that side and afterall would you be able to drive with alertness if you received a call by cell phone while driving that informed you of the death of anyone you know, let alone loved family member?

Yes.

Yes within reason.... The hands free device sould be totally hands free to answer, dial and hang up. Possibly all voice command.

Why: I have talked to my mother almost workday since 1997 when I got my first cell phone. And yes, I use a hands free devise and no, I have never had or almost had an accident (to my knowledge) while talking on the phone. I typically do the dialing before leaving the parking spot and the phone auto hangs up when we finish. All of you can wag you fingers at me all you want, but with the hours I was working back then, I would have never been able to talk to her otherwise. And I know that someday, she will not be there to talk to, but because of the cellphone I have been able to have a special time everyday to have for us.

Yes and especially with teen drivers!(It only takes a second and teens especially do not have the experience of driving defensively).

Hands Free devices,(with voice command) I think, can be used in certain situations. My hubby is a Psychologist and often gets calls on an Emergency basis and many times there is no safe place to pull over. And sometimes we have ordered our teenage daughter to call us when she's home, safe and sound. In those cases, I usually take the call, but sometimes she forgets and dials her Dad's number. We have since worked out a system where she texts us a certain number and then I call her back at home and that works.
