Sad and a little irate.

On the one hand, I'm mad at CPS for thinking about taking the child from the home, but yet, I'm alos irate at the parents for not participating or working on the real issue. The kid has a disorder and needs help!

If you replace the issue of obesity with autism and the parents were not seeking help would your feelings be different?

I think this is one of those classic tales of the "Road to Hell being paved with good intentions". Child Protective Services should stay out of this one. In fact if they want to help this child, they should help the family with some counseling with a qualified counselor and provide some assistance with a dietician. However, in the end if the family does not want the assistance, then leave them alone.

I will now retire from my soapbox to eat my third donut of the morning, which someone just dropped by my office.

Oh, lighten up will ya! Get it?

The parents need to be PARENTS! It's called saying No and sticking to it.

But I agree with PEF about the good intentions road - meddling governmental busybodies are too intrusive - they know how we should live better than we do.

That said, this kid is hesded for a place where he will be sucking the tax revenue down his big, fat, huge gullet when he is older. If he continues on the charted course, he will never work and will need continuing medical care.

This is a tough one - so CPS should get the parents some help to say NO to the kid.

My feelings are mixed at best. I had a friend who's father is a Psychiatrist. Even in the 70's he made it clear that he had to fill out paperwork to get a judge to wire peoples mouths shut!

How about the Illinois woman that was still breast-feeding the kid at 8 years of age? -> http://tinyurl.com/yhuk3p. If you ever wondered why men go for the chest, ponder the article above.

What gets me most is that the Mother has refused any attempts by the government to help her and her kid. With simple blood tests they can determine a great many things, such as is the hypothalamus not working? -> (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothalamus) Does he have a Thyroid Signalling Hormone (TSH) deficiency, or an overabundance of Ghrelin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghrelin) or a lack of leptin?

Due to the fact that the mother seems unwilling to help not only herself but her son, she by definition is incapable of RESPONDING to the issue. In this case the state must carefully consider all options, but the tell-tale is the mothers inability to be responsible, i.e. respond to the issue.

Whichever course this issue takes, the kid is messed up for life by any means! Even if they find a chemical cause, he still will suffer psychological and emotional
damage.

THERE WAS THE MATE TO THIS STORY
BACK IN THE OL' HOMETOWN. HE DIED
AS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL. A HAPPY
GO-LUCKY KID. EVERYONE IN TOWN KNEW
"MOOSE". THERE WAS NO GOV.SLOPHEADS
STICKING THEIR NOSE IN, SO WHAT. THE FAMILY WAS HAPPY, IF HE HAD BEEN LIKE SOME OF THE OTHERS AND WRAPPED THE FAMILY CAR AROUND A TREE WHAT WOULD THE GOV. PEOPLE HAVE DONE?

I'm hoping that they've checked him out thouroughly and ruled out Willie Prader's Syndrom, and all other medical issues.

If Mohammed won't come to the Mountain, then the Mountain should go to Mohammed before they take this child into custody. The Mom doesn't attend counseling sessions, etc...so send Super Nanny Jo over there to live in with them, teach the MOM HOW to be a MOM and how to cook nutritional foods. (or does this only happen to overprivilged WASP's in America for "Reality T.V."?) Have a Counselor go to the home...one for the mother and one for the kid.

patr...you're so right. If this child were autisitic or in the MH/MR system, he'd have tons of services available to him.My husband provides "Wrap Around Services" to Special Needs kids and has trained people going into the homes and schools. The success rate is phenomenal!

Sometimes it does take a village to raise a child but the "village" should not be CPS! This annoys me as much as the Spanking Law that they're trying to pass in California!
