Question #517

From "The Book of Questions" by Gregory Stock, PH.D

Q #49

While parking late at night, you slightly scrape the side of a Porsche. You are certain no one is aware of what happened. The damage is minor and would not be covered by insurance. Would you leave a note?

I actually did hit a vehicle in a parking lot once after I had just learned to drive ... there were no witnesses and I was so scared that I just drove off. I have often wondered about how that person felt when they came out and saw the dent in their car and I've felt bad ...

So .... I think I would leave a note and my card ... and let the cards fall where they may. It's a Karma thing ...

Doesn't matter what kind of car it is - if it is a small scratch, I would not leave a note - if I really banged it, I would

Ummm. maybe or not...hard to say depends on the stoopid factor for the day. I hope I would.

I would always leave a note...whether it's a small scratch or a large one, a porsche or a pinto, it's still someone's car and I know I would be angry if it happened to me and nobody fessed up.

small scratch, no...small door ding, no (nobody else does)...large scratch or dent, probably

I would leave a note that says,

"I was here and you weren't, now you are here and I am not"
(unsigned of course)

Yes...I would leave a note. My DH had a Porsche for years and had this happen to him. Really doesn't matter what brand the car...just know how it feels when it happens!

I probably would because ya just don't know how it will come back to haunt you.

My son, I might add stupid teenage son, bumped a car in a parking lot, didn't leave a bit of damage.

He made no attempt to find the owner of the vehicle or leave a note.

Some one did see and called the police. Unfortunately, my son had been drinking. (Did I mention stupid teenager??) So when the cops come he gets scared and ends up making the situation 100 Xs worse.

He has spent over 2 years trying to overcome this one stupid mistake and I worry he may not be able to unless he suddenly can remove head from a$$. *Sigh*

So in the event that things could get much worse I'd probably leave a note to be on the safe side.

Most definetely I would leave a note. Only if it was a rent-a-wreck, i.e. a wreck of a car would I not leave a note. I owned a car with a bad paint job - door dings and scratches didn't affect it's appearance. I am also a no door ding kinda guy, I take pride in my automobiles.

Brings up a funny story about Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We parked in a parking lot off of Canal Street. When we returned there was one car blocking EVERYONE in the parking lot from leaving. So grandpa said, 'get me a rock', proceeded to smash the side window and both side mirrors. Left a note attached to the car leaving his name and stating that if he ever meet this person he would do them grievous bodily harm that would render them handicapped. Then granpa, my dad and uncle placed the car in neutral and PUSHED into CANAL Street during Mardi Gras. We got in our car and left! Poetic Justice

I probably would, because in these days, you never know who's watching: security cameras, cell phones, etc. Plus, my conscience would bother me.

However, one should ALWAYS CYA! Always carry a camera or have a cellphone that is equipped with one and take a picture of the "minor damge". It's amazing how a little scratch that insurance would not cover, suddenly becomes MAJOR BODY WORK with a new paint job! Just because I'm honest, doesn't mean everyone is!

Gretchen: I feel your pain Sweetie. I have a younger brother who, up until 13 months ago, still had his head firmly planted up his buttocks. It should see the light of day around December. I'm praying, that "this time", the "time served" will be enough to deter him from ever picking up another drink. He's not a teenager...he's 41! He's just never grown up!

Only if my conscience was in overdrive that day.

Been there done that; had it happen to me--no note, just a busted light.

I would leave a note with my vitals.
