Question #235

From: The KID's Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, PH.D.

If you became so sick that you would die if you didn't stay hooked up to a large life-support machine for the rest of your life, would you want someone to pull the plug?

If I were hooked up to a life support but was able to communicate and use my brain and at least function from that perspective, no I would not want someone to pull the plug. If however, I was hooked up to life support and was basically commatose, then I would leave that up to my wife. I would not want her to suffer needlessly by watching me waste away. I think it becomes a quality of life issue for your family at that point.

If I am a large, bed-ridden vegetable (like a broccoli, or more likely a huge cauliflower), I wouldwant the plug pulled.

My wife and I have gotten the various powers of attorney paperwork executed so this is already decided.

Although . . . as things stand right now, I am worth more dead than alive, so if I suddenly assume room temperature and my wife is jetting off the sunny climes with a boy toy, someone call the authorities.

Heck, get out of the way, I'm pulling the plug myself. Otherwise, yes pull the plug

Ditto PEF & Bronco....

If I can't ask for a dr pepper: unplug me

Pull the plug. Use the money that would have kept the contraption working to have a party. That amount should be able to purchase at least a case of a good beer...maybe a keg!

Absolutely - pull that plug. I would not want my spouse to suffer watching and caring for me for hopeless agonizing years.

I want him to remember me as the happy wife who loves him dearly.

We have Living Wills with norotrized copies with our Attorney, Doctor and family. We decided on this after my surgery in 2002 and the disasterous continuing aftermath.

WHY ARE YOU WASTING TIME READING
THIS WHEN YOU SHOULD BE PULLING
THE PLUG. YOU SHOULD HAVE PULLED IT
YESTERDAY.

Cincin21 my lips are sealed for a nominal percentage if you pull Bronco's plug. (Can't believe I'm the only one who thought of this)

I would like to leave it up to my family. If it would be more painful for them to unplug me than I don't want to force them into that. If it would take the inconvenience away from them to unplug me than I would want that.

It would depend on my children. If me being around provided them with comfort and I was not a financial burden on them I would leave it to them to decide when they were ready to say good bye to me.

If I was just taking up space and the kids were ready I would want to be unplugged and my organs given to someone who needed them.

I believe Bronco and I have it set out in writing that we would want the plug pulled ...

If you want the plug pulled ... get it in writing!!
