If you reside in the borders of the state of Texas, the answer is a resounding NO. If however you reside outside of the borders of Texas, an area my father-in-law refers to as "Yankeeland" then the answer is yes beans belong in chili. I like my chili served with a nice big juicy hotdog and coleslaw on top of the chili. Those folks in the Carolinas know what a good chili dog is all about!
I have to confess, though not a native Texan, I do like all meat chili, especialy grilled with some scrambled eggs or put in an omelet with cheese.
I like beans in my chili ... particularly Kidney Beans ... but I'll take whatever beans there are in it.
I like chili served with Fritoes and Cheese ....
I think I would like the chili on spaghetti thing that they do in Cincinnati, but I have never tried it.
If the Chili is soupy, I really like it on cornbread ... yummers!
NO BEANS IN CHILI!!!!!!!
I don't care what Cincin says.
I have buddied up to the CASI folks, the ones who host the Chilli cook offs. Accordign to the RULES, chilli is only supposed to have meat and chilli sauce - PERIOD!. That said I do like Black Beans in my chilli.
Chilli goes great on hot-dogs and toast. Try it sometime, you just might like it.
I like "Green Chili" which has pork, habanero peppers, anaheim peppers, green chilis, jalepeno, tomato, and a couple of other things I can't think of. MMM! Jarrod agrees.
I prefer bean less Texas red. But I like mild with lots of spice from cumin, garlic and red chili powder.
I love chili with a little mustard, cheese and onions. Chili dogs are fine and Frito pie was a weekend staple growing up. (Baked in the oven style) CIN - Steak-n-Shake servers Spaghetti 5-way. It is quite tasty.
But my favorite application is a Chili, Cheese & Onion omelet.
Here is a follow-up on the definition and history of chili for those who are interested.

And finally here is an illustration of the Texas perspective on chili:
"Chili concocted outside of Texas is usually a weak, apologetic imitation of the real thing. One of the first things I do when I get home to Texas is to have a bowl of red. There is simply nothing better."
Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th President of the United States
AHAA the big Chili & Cornbread debate!!!lol
Of course Chili has to include beans, beef, bell peppers, onions, celery and seasonings. I like it on the thick side served in a large bowl with a big slice of hot cornbread!
As a Westcoaster we enjoy creating fine dining...good with wine!
bree
(I'm really very shy about expressing my opinions)
No offense but Chili is not to be eaten with wine as it does not produce the desired flatulant factor. BEER ONLY!
Beans, ground beef, onions, green peppers, spices (I prefer it mild to medium rather than 5 alarm style), lots of grated cheese on top. Left over chili is great served on a hot dog. It doesn't matter to me if you want cornbread beside it, on top of it or under it. It's all a matter of personal taste. It's the Chili that's the "Star" and everything else is a side dish as far as I'm concerned. LOL And a big pot of Chili cooking on a Sunday to have to eat with a cold beer to drink while watching the ball game is Nirvana!
Happy Birthday Bree!
NO BEANS!!!!!!
Sometimes I like just crackers with chili. Some times cheese. Sometimes cheese and sour cream. Some times corn bread with. Not a big onion person.
Green peppers in CHILI!!! That is 'stew'......what an atrocity!
