Cornelius Vanderbuilt or J.P. Morgan, would have been nice to own a railroad and shipping empire, especially since I love trains and boats so much.

But if I were selecting based upon total character and integrity, there are two clear but distinctly different choices in my mind.

First, Lt. Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who commanded the 20th Maine Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg and by whose action during the battle ensured a Union Victory and ultimately changed the course of the Civil War. He was in every major battle during the Civil War, rose to the rank of Brigadier General, was given the honor of accepting the surrender of the Confederate Army after Robert E. Lee signed the surrender at Appomattix, was wounded 5 times in battle, had several horses shot out from under him, won the Congressional Medal of Honor, a 4 term governor of the State of Maine, lived to the ripe old age 86 and died of his wounds suffered those many years previous.

The other person would be Henry J. Heinz who built Heinz foods into a world wide empire from the ashes of his first company Heinz & Noble which had to declare bankruptcy because his partner Noble embezzled and squandered the company's money. H.J. Heinz, worked to rebuild the company, changing the name to its present one, and he began by writing a book the words "Moral Obligations" and then proceeded to list every one of his creditors that he owed money to from the bankruptcy and the amounts, even though this debt was discharged in the bankruptcy case. As he rebuilt his business, he paid every one of those creditors back their money with interest, regaining them all as customers for Heinz Company. He was the only major food manufacturer that lobbied for the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 which set sanitation and processing standards for the food industry. He did this to his own potential peril as he and his family received death threats during this period. His company was the first to offer full healthcare benefits to his workers most of whom were woman, including daycare, educational benefits.

You know, I'm sitting here and thinking, while there are many heroic and glamorous figures in history that are very tempting to say, "I'd like to have been them.", if you look at the times that they lived in....not so glamorous! LOL Perhaps what molded them into the strong characters they were was their environment, their struggles, their hardships.(Betsy Ross, Florence Nightengale) Women that I admired greatly (Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, etc), had very sad and lonely lives. So I guess, for right now, I'm happy to be me and hopefully, I can contribute something to society. It doesn't need to be something so great and auspicious as to be written into History books, but if I can help my fellow man in any way, I'll be happy, for I shall only pass this way but once.

To my friend Bronco - so what's your point? I actually did have some free time this morning, so I took it so there! :-)

To RH, great response to the question. We should all be grateful to contribute in our own ways.

Of course on a more hilarious note, my contribution is to write long winded, historical responses for the benefit of Bronco and my wife, who upon reading the response just asked me to write her biography.

In response to my husband's l o n g posting... I have to say, why would I want to be someone other than ME! (He does make life interesting.) But if I had to choose one person, it would have to be a contemporary living in the world today (see prior comments on living in a prior era) so I pick Oprah, Barbara Bush or Martha. Oprah and Barbara because they are such strong giving people. Martha because, hey, I would love to have all her real estate!
