Question #227

Did you ever run away when you were a kid?

Where did you go?

Never ran away as a kid, I decided to save that for adulthood when the consequences are far bigger. I left college after my second year and joined the Navy because I was really tired of getting up early to go to class.

Real smart, PEF! They fooled you good!

I ran away like any kid - to the end of the driveway, or under the trees in the back yard, so nothing special there.

When I was 7 (1961!!), I got lost for a day in downtown Frankfurt Germany. We arrived in Germany on a Sunday (my Dad was stationed there), and my Mom took me to the school bus (2nd grade) on Monday morning. It was the wrong bus and took me to the wrong school. So, like any self respectingkid, I wandered away from that school rather than ask someone for help. I ended up walking all over downtown Frankfurt, not able to talk to anyone, not knowing my adress, basically clueless. I finally saw a US Army MP (military policeman for those who don't know), and he drove me around in his jeep until I recognized my house. I got home just as the right school bus was letting the other kids off, so I walked in the house at the correct time. The only way my Mom knew anything was amiss was when the MP followed me into the house and told her where he found me.

That is my run away/wander away/be a stupid kid story.

I think I was about 3 when I ran away. My dad told me everything I had belonged to him, so I shucked everything and ran away to the bus stop naked. The folks get a kick out of that one.

I really saved running away until I was an adult. I ran away for a weekend in the summer of 1994. It's when I started to formulate my plan to get away from my first husband.

Nope .... never packed a kerchief and tied it to a stick and walked off ... saw it on TV a lot, though. I DID however wander off for hours at a time ... but we had 1,000 acres of property for me to roam ... trees and creeks and bridges ....

I liked sitting under bridges when the creek was kinda low and watching a listening to it ... I also liked going out into the alfalfa fields and laying down in the tall grass and watching the clouds go by ...

SURE DID, EVEN MADE A 'CARRY-ALL'.
DON'T KNOW IF YOU KIDS EVER SEEN ONE, THE HOBOS[BUMS] HAD THEM.[DEPRESSION] EVERYTHING THEY OWNED TIED UP
IN APIECE OF CLOTH AND CARRIED OVER THE SHOULDER ON A STICK. ANYHOW MOTHER ALWAYS CHUCKED IN
SOME GRAHAM CRACKERS AND AN APPLE
OR TWO DEPENDING ON HOW MANY OF US
WERE RUNNING AWAY. OFF WE WENT TO
THE 'CRICK' FOR A SWIM IN WATER
ABOUT 4-5 INCHES DEEP, BY NOW THE
APPLES AND CRACKERS WERE USED UP
AND MOTHER WAS FORGIVEN, WE WERE GETTING HUNGRY AND ABOUT SUPPER TIME.
WE LIVED NEAR THE EDGE OF TOWN SO
ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS WALK THROUGH
THE CEMETARY. CLIMB A FENCE AND WE
WERE ON A FARM WITH THE CRICK .

I think I ran away every day for about a year. I ran to the barn. Thank goodness for my horse and my dog.
